Background of the Study
Flooding is a recurring disaster in Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, largely due to its location at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers. This natural disaster causes significant economic, environmental, and social disruptions, including loss of lives, displacement of people, and destruction of property. Development communication plays a crucial role in enhancing flood disaster preparedness by disseminating timely and accurate information, raising awareness, and fostering community engagement. Strategies such as community radio, social media campaigns, and participatory planning sessions can equip residents with the knowledge and tools needed to mitigate the impacts of flooding (Olawale & Abubakar, 2024). This study examines the effectiveness of development communication initiatives in enhancing flood disaster preparedness in Lokoja LGA, exploring their implementation and impact on community resilience.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Lokoja LGA faces annual flooding events, yet many residents remain ill-prepared to respond effectively. Despite various governmental and non-governmental interventions, gaps in communication have hindered widespread awareness and preparedness. Poor dissemination of flood forecasts, limited community involvement in disaster planning, and low levels of trust in information sources exacerbate the situation (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). This study investigates the effectiveness of development communication in addressing these challenges, focusing on its ability to enhance awareness, foster preparedness, and mitigate the impacts of flooding in Lokoja LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of development communication in flood disaster preparedness in Lokoja LGA.
To identify the challenges faced in using development communication for flood preparedness.
To assess the impact of participatory communication on community resilience to flooding.
1.4 Research Questions
How effective is development communication in flood disaster preparedness in Lokoja LGA?
What challenges affect the use of development communication for flood preparedness?
How does participatory communication impact community resilience to flooding?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Development communication significantly enhances flood disaster preparedness in Lokoja LGA.
Challenges such as resource constraints and limited public trust hinder effective communication.
Participatory communication positively impacts community resilience to flooding.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical role of development communication in disaster preparedness, particularly in flood-prone areas like Lokoja LGA. It provides actionable insights for policymakers, disaster management agencies, and communication practitioners on designing effective communication strategies that enhance preparedness and resilience. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on disaster risk reduction and sustainable development in vulnerable communities.
